Information on Bridge:
The Burnside Bridge was named after Union Major General Ambrose Burnside who commanded the
Ninth Corps at Antietam.
The original bridge runs over the Antietam Creek in Sharpsburg, Maryland and is part of the Antietam National Battlefield.
The fighting at the Burnside Bridge (Lower Bridge at Antietam Creek) was towards the end of the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862. General Burnside and 12,000 Union soldiers under his command had been trying to cross the stone bridge all morning. It took them so long because the Confederate soldiers, under the command of Brigadier General Robert Toombs, comanding tough Georgians had the advantage of hidden behind brush, trees and boulders on the opposing hillside and General Burnside did not know how small the Southern Force was defending the Bridge. Burnside's men finally crossed the bridge after many losses of life only to march into another larger bloody battle. September 17, 1862 was the bloodiest single day of the Civil War.
